Preserving Memories
The Illinois Bend Memorial Cemetery, located in the northeastern corner of Montague County, Texas, in the Red River Valley, has served as the final resting place for residents of the greater Illinois Bend community and their families for more than 150 years. The cemetery is designated a Historic Texas Cemetery by the Texas Historical Commission, with the oldest marked grave dating to 1873.
The cemetery is governed and maintained by the Illinois Bend Cemetery Perpetual Care Association, established in the 1970s. During the spring months, native Texas wildflowers, irises, and other flowering shrubs bring color to the grounds. As temperatures rise and spring gives way to summer, the flowers gradually yield to the native prairie grasses of North Texas.
Double arched pedestrian gates lead to the burial area of the cemetery from the east. Graves are marked with materials including marble, granite, limestone, sandstone, fieldstone, concrete and ceramic photographs.
Beyond the cemetery's burial area, but still within its grounds, stands a tabernacle that predates 1917. It is surrounded by large post oaks and eastern red cedars, trees that may be as old as—or even older than—the tabernacle itself.
